vert-logo.gif (3124 bytes) By habit, we are either predominantly positive, or predominantly negative in our attitudes. A predominantly negative person smiles, laughs and has fun at times, but responds negatively to other people, life situations and even themselves the majority of the time. It's bad for their emotional health, their relationships and can lead to a host of physical health problems.

The biggest danger for negative people is that they usually don't see themselves as negative, so improvement is difficult. For that reason, practitioners of natural therapeutics have for centuries recognized negative attitude, and the illnesses it leads to, as the most difficult kind of malady to correct.

Predominantly positive people are sometimes down, but recover quickly. They feel all the negative emotions, but don't get hung up in them. Most of the time they respond to negative situations in a positive way. They purposely choose to dwell on the positive, useful, healthy things.

The biggest danger for positive people is that they are surrounded by negative thinking, so it's difficult to maintain a healthy attitude. Radio, TV, films, magazines, newspapers and most coworkers are pretty negative. If we "go with the flow" we'll end up negative, too. To maintain a positive, healthy attitude we have to purposely wrench ourselves out of conventional thinking and do something dramatically different - and expect to catch flak for doing it.

A habit of responding to life's events with a predominantly positive attitude is a very healthy thing. It has tremendous benefit for our emotional health, our relationships and our physical health. But we are creatures of habit, so improvement in our attitude habits takes work. We wouldn't expect to strengthen our body by just thinking about exercise. In the same way, we shouldn't expect to change our emotional habits by just deciding to. To improve our emotional habits we need to practice positive emotional responses to people and events around us.

The Systemic Health Home Study Course provides a way to exercise positive emotions every day in order to strengthen them, and overcome negative attitudes. It puts the emphasis on how our emotional habits affect the Three Systemic Functions, thus the name Systemic Thinking.
