Using Systemic Exercise as an example: When we do a certain exercise, no matter how appropriate and comfortable it is, after a certain number of minutes the bloodstream will gradually get behind in the process of bringing oxygen, nutrients, hormones, etc. to the working tissues. It also gets behind in the process of cleaning away cellular wastes. And remember that the tissues start getting behind long before we feel it.
The secret of Alternation is to do each exercise until just before the tissues start getting behind, instead of continuing until we feel muscle fatigue. At that point, we alternate to a second exercise that emphasizes entirely different tissues. Before those tissues start getting behind we return to the first exercise, and alternate back and forth a few times, always staying out of the "getting behind" stage. We can do far more exercise, with less fatigue and more benefits. We should exercise long enough to NOTE: Keep in mind that these Principles were developed for health preservation; for prevention and correction of chronic illness, not for advanced fitness programs or athletics. High intensity exercise such as weight lifting, running, etc., require a different approach. However, when these Principles are applied to fitness and athletics, tremendous results occur. The Principle of Alternation is also applied to the other Systemic Health Techniques such as how to Rest (getting more rest from your sleep, staying relaxed throughout the day), Dietetics (using food to heal), Fasting (without hunger or symptoms), and how to eliminate negative Emotional Habits.
